RFID Technology: Superior Unique Identifiers for the DPP

Updated: Oct 19, 2024

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a digital record containing key information about a product’s composition, origin, and lifecycle. It's like an item’s official "papers" that track it from production to disposal. Under upcoming EU regulations, companies will need to provide detailed data on the sustainability of their products. This information will be accessible via a physical data carrier, such as a QR code or RAIN RFID tag, attached to the product. This tag connects the physical product to its digital record in the cloud, allowing verified product data to travel with the item throughout its lifecycle.

For example, by scanning a QR code on a product label with a smartphone, consumers can access information about the materials used, ownership history, and recycling instructions.

RFID and its subset, NFC, offer compelling options as “unique identifiers” that carry product-related data and can be accessed electronically through readers. With NFC, most smartphones serve as readers, making it accessible to end-users. RFID/NFC inlays are durable, long-lasting, and can be embedded or protected, making them ideal for use without needing a line of sight to read data, while also ensuring minimal interference with product design.

RAIN RFID (UHF) inlays, on the other hand, require dedicated readers. However, there is growing demand for "dual-frequency" inlays that combine RAIN RFID with NFC, offering both supply chain benefits like brand protection and efficiency, along with easy end-user access.

Custom RFID Inlays and Tags Make a Difference

The more precisely NFC, RAIN RFID, and dual-frequency inlays are tailored to specific products and environments, the greater their potential benefits. While some products, like industrial batteries, are straightforward to tag, others like consumer electronics, apparel, and toys will require more innovative and specialized solutions.

InnoWavesTech is at the forefront of this innovation with its high-performance RAIN RFID inlays and tags. We also offer a growing portfolio of NFC, HF, and dual-frequency products, all designed to meet the unique needs of various industries.
